drivers included Emanuele Pirro, Tom Kristensen, John Graham, Didier de
Radigues, David Brabham and Franck Lagorce. Steve Jenner, an instructor
at the Panoz Racing School, was the winning goalie. John Hindhaugh, the
anchor for the American Le Mans Series Radio Web, and Professional
Sports Car Racing Operations Director Tim Pendergast organized the match
and also played. Hindhaugh, who regularly plays "football" at
home in England, was unfortunately the losing goalie. Five crew members
from the Johansson Motorsports Team were among those who played on the
team with Hindhaugh.

Chris Bingham (#05-GTS Saleen S7R) and
road manager Greg Baylis of Park Place Racing/Fordahl Motorsports
were involved in a highway accident Monday on route to Road Atlanta
from Florida. On an entrance ramp from I-75 to I-475 in Macon
Georgia, their motor coach was hit by an electronic construction
sign. The split windshield in front of Bingham (who was driving) was
only buckled, but for passenger Baylis, the glass shattered into the
coach. Baylis said “We were behind our transporter in our motor
coach. We went around a corner of the construction and the
construction people had this sign board in the lane. It was hanging
out it enough that it impacted our windshield. The impact was enough
that it lifted me out of my seat and blew glass 45 feet to the back
of the bus. I had glass shards embedded all over me, even in my
ears. Luckily, I had put my sunglasses on 15 to 20 minutes sooner
which had protected my eyes.”
According to Bingham “It was an
interesting experience. There was a little area with this big
electronic sign, maybe 2 feet wide by 10 feet high. I was right on
the line and when the coach leaned a little bit, the sign clipped
the windshield. The police said the sign should have been farther
back. I called the team truck directly ahead of us and said we blue
the windshield out. We pulled over as soon as we could. We were
lucky. Gatroz sunglasses did their job” (The sunglass company
endorses Bingham and also gives a pair of glasses to the team
members).

For Tom Kristensen, this is
his second career ALMS pole. For Didier de Radiques, this
is his fourth P675 pole of the season (and career).
Andy Pilgrim (#4-GTS Chevrolet
Corvette C5-R) (about his first pole) "I’ve been
with the team since the inception of the GM Corvette
program, with my first race in 1999 in Daytona."
(about the pass last year near the end of the Petit)
"The biggest memory last year was the fans and the
race against the Oreca (Viper) Team. It was a landmark
event and I have a lot of respect for the teams we were up
against. But the biggest moment for me last year, was
receiving on the Tuesday after the event, an airmail
letter from Dale Earnhardt in which Dale said ‘You need
to teach me to drive a Corvette’." (about this
session) "The Goodyear tires worked well with lots of
stick. The traction conditions made when to put on the gas
an unknown, it was difficult out of turns 6 and 7. I got
the Saleens because I got on the gas sooner coming out of
the corners."
JJ Lehto (#42-GT BMW M3 GTR)
(coming back after last night’s crash) "The team
had to do a lot of work to get the car ready and it was
only five minutes before qualifying. They had to guess on
the setup, but fortunately the chassis stayed together.
Every corner was destroyed. I’m happy, very, very happy,
with the rebuilt car. The first lap since the rebuild it
felt like a brand new car. The crew only slept one and a
half hours last night. Today’s qualifying wasn’t easy,
having to start out on wet tires, and then changing to
slicks. There was lots of traffic, and I only got one
clear lap. It was getting good traction with a dry line,
but it was slippery if you got off the line." (about
tomorrow’s weather) "I don’t care. If it rains
it’s the same for everyone. Let’s just hope for good
weather." (about changing team drivers) "It’s
a little bit strange with a new co-driver, but its
understandable because what happened last night could have
happened to either of us and we would have both been out.
With my new co-driver, it’s a little more of a
Scandinavian team. It was my decision to stay with my
car." (about last night’s session) "I believe
a few of the drivers should not be out there as you saw
yesterday."
Scott Maxwell (#57-P675
Reynard 01Q/Judd) "We were dealing with a bit of
understeer and have been working on it all day. But
we’re very pleased with this qualifying position. The
car is very solid except for the understeer and we only
need to make a small tweak to get it right."
Emanuele Pirro (#2-P900 Audi
R8) "I’m happy on the car’s setup. My team sure
did their job on the setup. It didn’t look like we would
get both cars in the top two. But I am only off the pole
by one tenth so I can make it up during the race."
David Brabham (#50-P900 Panoz
LMP1 Roadster S) "I didn’t get a clean shot at a
totally clean lap, but the car felt great. The best lap I
had to lift for a slower car. So I didn’t get the pole.
But I feel that if I had a clean lap I would be the ‘big
man on the pole’."
Jörg Muller (#43-GT BMW M3
GTR) "Switching from rain to slicks was perfect
timing. If I hadn’t got stuck in traffic I could have
been quicker."

THE AMERICAN LE MANS SERIES PIT NOTES: Page 9 FRIDAY OCT 5, 2001
Didier de Radigues (#5-P675
Reynard 01Q/Judd) (about the size and quality of the
P675 field) "The cars are improving a lot since
Laguna Seca and here as well we’re coming closer and
closer to the big cars. It’s getting interesting. My
car was very good for the qualifying session. I was on
race tires because that’s what we had. I don’t know
what the others used or what their speeds were, but it
shows our team did good work." (would the longer
race help the class win overall) "We were
competitive at Le Mans and at the end of my stint we
were sixth overall. Reliability was our major problem at
Le Mans and at some other races, so I hope we will be
able to finish." (about his busy week) "It’s
been a fun week. I got to meet some of the media guys at
(go) carting and at soccer as they call it here, with
drivers and mechanics. It was fun."
Tom Kristensen (#1-P900 Audi
R8) (satisfied with the pole) "Yes it was very
satisfying to put the car on pole, for sure. We were
nervous and concerned about the weather because it
looked like it might be wet. The organizer told us it
would be wet and that was quite good. Which means you
can use basically as many tires as you can. When you
don’t expect (bad weather) you don’t go for the
softer tire. We used two sets of race tires because they
are also the quickest. It’s the best Michelin brought.
That’s why we did many slow laps to get the better lap
times. Normally you only have one set the way you
would like to conserve for the race, but because they
declared the session wet, you could put on what you
wanted. This morning with my qualifying setup I was very
happy but I had a little problem with the temperature on
the disks on the front brakes, so we changed them. I
couldn’t improve on my time on my second run, although
I ran into a little traffic, but I couldn’t have
improved more than a maximum tenth, and Emanuele (Pirro)
came very close." (about going for the win with the
championship wrapped up) "We’ve done that all
season. Sure it’s the last race and everyone wants to
finish up high. It’s a long time till the first race
of the 2002 season, it’s a long race, with many
yellows and a lot of traffic."
Oliver Gavin (#05-GTS Saleen
S7R) "It was very frustrating. We didn’t time the
weather correctly - going from wets to slicks. We could
have done so much better.
Tom Weickardt, owner
(#45-GTS Dodge Viper GTS-R) "We would have been on
the pole if it would have continued raining. We had the
best lap while on intermediates. The stop to change
tires and then running out of fuel put the advantage
back in the other guys hands."
Jordi Gene (#39-P675 Reynard
2KQ ROC/Volkswagen) "I should have been on pole! I
can’t believe this, no problems in three days, then
four problems in one half hour session. A misfire on the
first lap, an accident on the second, a spin and then
running out of petrol on the last lap. So, it was not so
great."

ALMS Combined morning
warmup (P900, P675, GTS and GT) – 30 minute session:
At 8:25, green flag. At 8:25 the temperature is 67 degrees with a light rain falling. The rain has come and gone all morning, from a heavy downpour to a light drizzle. The track temperature is 68 degrees (Michelin tire engineers). At 8:36, #05-GTS Saleen S7R (Ron Johnson) off and into the tire wall at turn 5. Driver is out of the car and OK. According to the driver, he got a little loose the first time through the esses, but thought it was because he was close to one of the prototypes. But the second time through he discovered there was a little stream of water running across the track, which took the car off course. He thought he’d be safe in the gravel but ended up hitting the wall anyway. The team reports the car is “bad”, but the engine and transmission seem to be intact, now it’s a rush to get the car fixed before grid time.
At 8:36, black flag all
(to retrieve the #05 car).
At 8:44, green flag. At 8:46, car #39-P675 Reynard 2KQ ROC/Volkswagen stopped on course, apparently out of fuel. At 8:55, checkered flag. 33 cars practiced in the wet conditions.
Top three in class:
#1-P900 Rinaldo Capello 1:25.073, #2-P900 Emanuele Pirro 1:25.959, #38-P900 Johnny Herbert 1:25.984; #39-P675 Jordi Gene 1:30.194, #11-P675 Mel Hawkins 1:40.096; #45-GTS Mike Hezemans 1:31.605, #88-GTS Peter Kox 1:33.205, #3-GTS Ron Fellows 1:34.814; #43-GT Jorg Muller 1:34.413, #22-GT Christian Menzel 1:35.289, #23-GT Lucas Luhr 1:35.569
Of the four driver's
championships in the American Le Mans Series, three
are to be decided in today's Audi presents Petit Le
Mans. Didier de Radigues has already clinched the LMP
675 class title, but the championships in the LMP 900,
GTS and GT classes are still to be determined. The
ALMS awards banquet will be held Sunday night at the
Chateau Elan.
All contending drivers
must run 50 race laps in order to earn points in this
race.
Emanuele Pirro leads the
LMP 900 points. There are several scenarios in which a
tie could occur for the championship, at which point
the tie would be broken by number of wins, etc.
However, if Pirro finishes second or higher, he will
win the title no matter what any of the other
contenders do. If Rinaldo Capello and Tom Kristensen
end up tied for the championship, which could happen
under several scenarios, Capello would be the champion
because he and Kristensen did not drive together at
Sebring and Capello was part of the winning team. He
therefore has one more win than Kristensen and would
win on the tiebreaker.
In the GTS class, Ron
Fellows can lock Terry Borcheller out of the
championship by finishing fourth or higher. He can
also lock Borcheller out by finishing fifth and
earning one bonus point. Johnny O'Connell can tie Ron
Fellows by earning a bonus point.
In the GT class, Sascha
Maassen must win the race to have any chance of
winning the championship. There are several scenarios
in which Maassen, Jorg Muller and JJ Lehto could
finish in a tie, and bonus points earned by any of the
three would break the tie. Lehto must finish ahead of
Muller to tie or possibly win, depending upon point
differences and one bonus point.

Mike Johnson, the owner
of Archangel Motorsports (#21-P675 Lola
B2K/40/Nissan), had a scare last week when he was
stranded in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, by Hurricane
Juliet. Johnson, a member of the cast of MTV's
popular television program "The Real
World" in 1994-95 in London, was in Mexico
shooting "The Real World/Road Rules
Challenge," which will air in February, when
the storm struck. Roads and bridges were washed out,
and communications were lost, including cell phones.
Johnson, along with 27 cast members and 45 members
of the film crew, were stranded from Sept. 26
through Sept. 30. The race team had no idea where he
was and could not contact him. There were a few
bottles of water and little food. "The worst
part was the lack of running water," he said.
"That meant that the bathroom was almost
unusable. Otherwise, I didn't fear for my life, but
I was fearing I'd miss Petit." Johnson's
journey home started on Tuesday of this week,
including having to walk across a river in
waist-high water, carrying his luggage above his
head, to get to the airport because of the
washed-out roads and bridges. His flight was late,
but he finally arrived at Dallas-Fort Worth Airport
at midnight, stayed in the airport and caught at
6:30 a.m. flight to Atlanta on Wednesday. He arrived
at Road Atlanta with one hour to spare before the
first practice.
Due to damage on the
#05-GTS Saleen S7R, the car will not be able to
present to the grid on time, and will be starting
from the pits.

Lucas Luhr
(#23-GT Porsche 911 GT3-RS) (after the first
stint) “I had to adjust the brake bias
from wet to dry setup at the beginning.
Traffic is bad and there are lots of
accidents. This is professional racing and
there are people that should not be out
there. It’s very dangerous.”
Scott Maxwell
(#57-P675 Reynard 01Q/Judd) (after the first
stint) “We still have rain tires on the
car, so we have to compromise for the rain
setup. The track conditions are getting
better, but I’m not getting enough grip on
the front tires, so the car is pushing.”
Grady Willingham
(#15-GT Porsche 911 GT3-R) “We had a
handling problem in the beginning. We pitted
under caution and made a wing change which
allowed me to gain three seconds per lap. We
had a fuel pump problem and are using the
reserve pump. The traffic is good out there.
The prototype cars are being real
considerate. The Corvette dove in on me in
turn 3, but otherwise its been great.”
Terry Borcheller
(#26-GTS Saleen S7R) (on being champion)
“In 1982 at this very same track, I was in
a WKA race. I had to win the race and the
point leader had to break in order for me to
win (that championship). Well, he broke and
I ended up winning the race and the
championship. I was just thinking about that
this morning and said to myself ‘Hey, its
happened again’.”

wiring from the starter to the
solenoid. We got the car into position

Post
Race Quotes:
Emanuele
Pirro (#2-P900 Audi
R8) (when did you know
you were the champion)
"When Tom
(Kristensen) went off
early, the
championship was
virtually closed. This
is not the way I
wanted it. We had a
good car and I knew
that by following the
yellow car (#1) I
could win. I had to do
a conservative race
but at the same time I
knew I had to go for
it. Petit Le Mans is
an important race and
I am happy to have
won. I am not just the
champion, we are the
champions, Frank and
I. His support made it
possible." (about
the race and traffic)
"We battled quite
a lot with the Panoz
early, my car was good
and I felt I could
catch Tom. Once Tom
went off it turned
into a battle with
Panoz, so I had to
keep one eye on the
championship, and one
eye on the race. We
met a lot of drivers
who had not had enough
laps of practice. We
spend every week in
our cars but there
were people who only
do this once a year.
To say it plainly,
some people need more
practice."
(Comparing winning Le
Mans with winning the
ALMS Championship)
"Le Mans is a
very, very important
race. I would not swap
for anything. But the
guy who wins (there)
is not always the
best. There is a lot
of luck involved. A
championship is more
difficult to win. But
if I had to choose, I
would not swap for a
Le Mans win."
(one last word)
"We all have had
a hard year,
especially with losing
Michele (Alboreto) and
we all miss him and
think about him a lot.
We are sad also for
the tough times in the
world, which, if you
compare this
championship with,
this counts for very
little."
Frank
Biela (#2-P900 Audi
R8) "There was
lots of traffic. Going
round the slow ones,
went through the dirt
four or five times and
I went off and I was
always thinking
‘maybe it will
happen again’. Apart
from that, we had a
perfect race. It was a
hard race, a tough
race, but even so, I
expected a more
difficult race. Our
objective was to win
the
championship."
(about his race
strategy) "As
soon as possible you
need to be a lap
ahead, always pushing
100 percent in case
you have a problem,
because you can lose a
lap very
quickly."
Andy
Pilgrim (#4-GTS
Chevrolet Corvette
C5-R) "For the
beginning two hours I
had good battle with
Terry Borcheller.
Franck (Freon) and
Kelly (Collins) drove
great and ran this
race as a long sprint
race. We went as fast
as we could go to hold
the tires together.
Kelly
Collins (#4-GTS
Chevrolet Corvette
C5-R) "Andy and I
have been driving
hard, and have had a
great year. The repeat
as champions of this
race is bittersweet,
but we’re ectatic,
this is a dream come
true. "
Franck
Freon (#4-GTS
Chevrolet Corvette
C5-R) "I’m
lucky to have these
two guys, they drove
fast and safe. This
was a great year for
GM. I’m proud to be
with this team."
Terry
Borcheller (#26-GTS
Saleen S7R) "I
saw Ron’s (Fellows)
car and figured they
would get it running
again and get back in
the race and get the
points they needed for
the championship. Then
I heard they
disqualified the car.
In a way, its
sickening for Ron,
because I know what it
must be like to lose a
championship like
that. But at the same
time I was so happy, I
couldn’t believe we
won it. The race was a
lot like our season,
champions are those
that will never quit.
I had a good race with
Andy (Pilgrim),
passing back and
forth. We lost some
laps in the middle of
the race, also I lost
a wheel nut on the
left front, then lost
a cylinder – a plug
wire vibrated off. We
were wounded at the
end but still
going."
Franz
Konrad (#26-GTS Saleen
S7R) "I’m very
happy, It was a great
season, wonderful. It
was a great crowd
tonight, and all week,
actually. I love the
Petit (Le Mans),
it’s a great mix of
talent. I can’t wait
until next year."
Bill
Auberlen (#6-GT BMW M3
GTR) "It was
great to be teamed
with these two guys.
The BMW was absolutely
flawless. BMW built a
phenomenal car. It was
as good at the end as
it was at the
beginning. The
Yokohama’s were
perfect."

THE AMERICAN LE MANS SERIES PIT NOTES: Page 27 SATURDAY OCT 6, 2001
Boris
Said (#6-GT BMW M3
GTR) (about the
race) "We
planned on going at
a controlled pace
and were very
careful in traffic.
The team did a great
job, this was a big
race and it’s nice
to end on a high
note."
Hans
Stuck (#6-GT BMW M3
GTR) (about this
race) "This win
means a lot to me.
I’ve won a Sebring
and Le Mans, and
this is another
milestone in my
career. I was
catching up with the
#42 and was about to
make my move but
then the pace car
came out. We
didn’t make any
mistakes."
Jörg
Muller (#43-GT BMW
M3 GTR) (on being GT
champion) "It
was shame I
couldn’t share the
championship with JJ.
We had a fantastic
weekend, the car was
very good on fuel.
We came here to win
the
championship."
Jason
Workman (#21-P675
Lola B2K/40/Nissan)
(about driving the
end of the race with
only one gear)
"It sucks. It
was really a matter
of coming into the
pits because we
couldn’t get
started if we came
in while being stuck
in fifth gear. So we
were cutting it
close with fuel, but
we made it!"
Andy
Wallace (#38-P900
Audi R8) (about
losing a wheel
during the race)
"Driving around
after the wheel came
off wasn’t the
problem. Its when it
comes off, it came
off at 125 mph. Or
course you correct
immediately, but by
then you’re in the
grass and the wall
is coming. And then
when you turn it
just spins, so your
differential goes
out and you have to
be very careful. And
it was a shame
because we were
having a pretty good
run until
then." (about
the race)
"Considering
all we went through,
third was good, but
it would have been
nice to be on top of
that podium. We came
so close this
season, but
haven’t managed to
pull it off."
Johnny
Herbert (#38-P900
Audi R8) "We
were first (at one
point in the race),
then second when the
wheel (problem
happened). Then the
seal in the brake
calipers (caused
problems) and the
lengthy stop cost us
three laps. It’s a
bit of a shame, so
disappointing. But
it was still good
getting on the
podium. It was a
long tough road
keeping out of
trouble. To lead
early on … it was
a shame to not lead
at the end."
Bruno
Lambert (#5-P675
Reynard 01Q/Judd)
(about making up
ground finishing on
the podium)
"After 30 laps
we had an electrical
failure. We came
back around 4:00 and
made up 160 laps on
other cars that were
breaking down. When
we got back (on
course) the only
thing we could
really do was hope
that enough people
would fall off the
track so that we
could move up. And
that’s pretty much
what happened. We
moved her up to
third. That I did
not expect, so
it’s a good result
based on what
happened. "
(about the season)
"Running with
Dick Barbour has
been great. You
know, the car is
great. Its pretty
quick. Working with
Didie (de Radigues)
has been great
because we work very
good to gether and
get good results.
Today has been
somewhat
disappointing
because we were
clearly the quickest
car out there. But
you know, speed is
not enough. You need
a little bit of luck
and reliability.
Today we didn’t
have that."
Milka
Duno (#57-P675
Reynard 01Q/Judd)
"Our Goodyear
tires were
consistent. They
were very good, from
the start to the
final, I was happy
with the tires.
" (on a top ten
finish) "Yes, I
was hoping to finish
in the top ten, but
I was surprised we
would finish first
in our class. It was
perfect." (on
the season) "We
are happy because
the team worked
very, very hard, and
both cars finished
on the podium.
Finally, the
championship was
very important for
the team. It was
incredible – Petit
Le Mans, we
won!"
